If you’re planning a trip to Kenya’s beautiful coast, the SGR train to Mombasa is one of the best — and most scenic — ways to get there. The Madaraka Express, as it’s officially known, connects Nairobi and Mombasa in just over five hours, offering comfort, affordability, and breathtaking views along the way.

1. A Modern Travel Experience

The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is Kenya’s modern railway line linking Nairobi and Mombasa. Since its launch, it has transformed travel between the two cities — replacing the long, tiring bus rides with a smooth, fast, and safe alternative.

Each journey takes passengers through savannah plains, wildlife conservancies, and coastal landscapes, making it not just transportation, but part of the adventure itself.

2. Two Train Options: Express & Inter-County

There are two main types of SGR passenger trains:

  • Madaraka Express (Direct Train) – Travels straight from Nairobi to Mombasa with no stops. Ideal for travelers who want to get there quickly.
  • Inter-County Train – Makes short stops at key towns like Athi River, Emali, Mtito Andei, Voi, and Mariakani. Perfect for those exploring along the route.

Both trains are punctual and well-maintained, offering Economy, First-Class and Premium options.

3. Onboard Experience

The SGR train offers a clean, safe, and comfortable journey with air-conditioned coaches, friendly attendants, and plenty of legroom.

Economy Class: Affordable and comfortable, with 3+2 seating and large windows for scenic views.
First Class: Spacious seats, quieter cabins, and access to the dining car for snacks and drinks.

Don’t forget your camera — you might spot elephants, giraffes, or zebras as the train passes through Tsavo National Park!

Premium Class: a luxurious experience, extra space, reclining seats, large windows, and priority service. Perfect for relaxing, catching up on work, or simply enjoying the scenic route in style.

4. Schedule and Duration

  • Nairobi to Mombasa: Morning, afternoon, and night departures daily.
  • Travel Time: Around 5–6 hours, depending on the train type.
  • Departure Stations: Nairobi Terminus (Syokimau) and Mombasa Terminus (Mzima Springs area, near Mariakani).

It’s recommended to arrive at least one hour before departure for check-in and security screening.

5. Ticket Booking and Prices

Tickets can be booked easily online via the Kenya Railways SGR website, at station counters, or through the *USSD code 639# on Safaricom.

Approximate Prices:

  • Economy Class: KES 1,500
  • First Class: KES 4,500
  • Premium: KES 12,000

Tickets often sell out, especially during holidays — so book at least a few days in advance.

6. Getting to and from the Stations

  • In Nairobi: Take a Bolt or Uber to the Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau (about 25–40 minutes from the city center).
  • In Mombasa: From the Mombasa Terminus, you can grab a taxi, tuk-tuk, or Bolt to your hotel in Nyali, Bamburi, or Diani.

Most hotels and tour companies also offer transfer services from the station.

7. Why Choose the SGR Train?

  • Scenic views through Kenya’s national parks
  • Affordable and safe alternative to flying
  • Eco-friendly and comfortable
  • Cultural experience — travel like locals do!

The SGR is ideal for solo travelers, families, and anyone who wants to experience Kenya’s beauty between the city and the coast.

Final Thoughts

The SGR train to Mombasa isn’t just a way to reach the coast — it’s part of the journey. From the comfort of your seat, you’ll watch the landscape shift from rolling hills to open plains and finally to the warm, tropical air of the Indian Ocean.

If you’re heading to Mombasa, skip the long road trip and take the train — it’s fast, scenic, and an experience you’ll remember long after your vacation ends.
